Role Summary:
Baker Hughes, a GE company has an opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer – Additive Manufacturing supporting the Enterprise Additive Manufacturing (AM) team at the Rankin Rd. facility in Houston, TX. The AM team is looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join a fast paced group that provides technical and manufacturing support for all product lines across BHGE. This position requires a strong fundamental background in mechanical engineering and design.  It is essential that the candidate has a proven track record of creating new and innovative design for multiple different applications.
 Essential Responsibilities:
  • Experience taking products from concept to prototype with production in mind.
  • Quickly able to understand complex mechanical assemblies and a variety of different tools for different industries.
  • Engage with customers to explore and understand needs for 3D printing, manufacturing, and innovation.
  • Develop and lead research programs working with project managers, technicians, and engineers across other disciplines in the organization.
  • Able to communicate effectively with cross-departmental teams of engineers for development of new applications, testing, or other related project initiatives.
  • Able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Research new manufacturing technologies, request quotations, select vendors, issue requisitions, schedule demonstrations.
  • Stay current with industry trends and market information.
  • Maintain an understanding of internal customer business challenges and how to implement AM as a solution.
  • Experience with the development of technical work scopes for incorporation with proposals.
  • Understanding of metallurgy for titanium, stainless steel, and nickel based alloys.
  • Able to run a design of experiments.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years of mechanical Design experience
  • 3+ years of experience with designing for Direct Medal Laser Melting (DMLM), Direct Energy Deposition (DED), or other metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes.
  • 5+ years of experience in Solidworks.
Desired Characteristics:
  • FEA and CFD background desired.  Experience with topology optimization, lattice structures, and flow optimization.
  • Preferred software familiarity with AM Process Simulation with Ansys, Autodesk Netfabb, Simufact or similar.
  • Familiarity with Magics or other AM slicing software.
  • Designing custom support structures for powder bed AM process. 
  • Hands on experience running any AM machine.
  • Familiarity with Teamcenter
